I have been model railroading since I was a kid. Initially with an HO layout on a sheet of
plywood when I was a kid. In 1990 with an HO layout in my apartment. Then a Gn3 layout
in my duplex in 1991 and then Gn3 taking two rooms and about 600sq ft in my previous
home, from 1995. Around 2000, spent time with ‘riding scale’ (as I call it), and built a 4in
scale ride in loco on 7.5” gauge (still have, track someday). After moving to a new home in
2023, my first option and layout is a 2 rail, O scale, shelf layout for operations plus lite
scenery. Future hopes for a building and larger large scale layout.
When I reference model scales…
G = 1/22.5 scale, correct scale for G
Gn3 = G scale, 3ft narrow gauge on LGB / Gauge 1
G Std Ga = G scale Std Gauge, on Gauge 3
F = 1/20.3 scale
Fn3 = F scale, 3ft ng modeling on LGB / Gauge 1
#1 = 1/32 scale, loosely between G and O
#1n3 = modeling 3ft ng in 1/32 scale
LS = other Large Scale stuff that runs on LGB track
…not everything on LGB is actually “G scale”
Gauge 1 = 45mm, 1 3/4in, G gauge, LGB track
Gauge 3 = 63.5mm, 2 1/2in, Std Ga for G scale
G1 or #1 = 1/32 scale, 1 3/4in, Gauge 1
O = 1/48 scale
On3 = O scale, 3ft narrow gauge
On30 = O scale, 30in narrow gauge
HO = 1/87 scale
HOn3 = HO scale, 3ft narrow gauge
Marek Mountain - Hill Country Line - a 2 Rail, O scale layout loosely based on the
Fredericksburg & Northern RR that ran in the Texas Hill Country. A shelf layout being
built, starting on in 2025. This is a new page being built…
Marek Mountain RR 2 - my previous indoor Gn3 layout, in 1/22.5 scale, about 600sq
ft, using a two car garage and around the master bedroom for a grade. From 1995 to
2023.
Marek Mountain Tram - the larger riding scale, using the common 7.5 inch gauge, I
built a ride-in narrow gauge diesel, loosely 4 inch scale. I also coordinated the ‘Alamo
Gang’ mini meets for several years. The loco and some cars are stored, awaiting track to
be laid at new house. From 2000 to…
Marek Mountain RR 1 - first indoor Gn3 layout in a rented duplex. Using the living
room, a layout that circled the room, had a hidden staging and branch line with
switchback. Hand-laid track, DC with PFM sound. From 1991 to 1995.
G Scale Timesaver - for a couple years, I took a G scale switching layout to area train
shows. Was 3ft x 20ft of table sections and LGB track. A home made, hand-held throttle
and photos to assign car switching. From 1989 to 1991.
HO SP layout - back in to model railroading, I built a 5ft x 12ft HO layout in a one
bedroom apartment. Featured a small yard and 25ft run at 2% grade to reach upper
areas of a mountains area, plus large hidden storage area. From 1987 to 1991.
First 4x8 plywood HO layout - about 5 years old, my dad built me an HO layout on
a sheet of plywood. It sat on-top a pool table in his auto repair shop waiting area. I ran
trains to entertain customers. From 1969 to late 1970s.
